Quasiparticle interference in mono- and bilayer graphene
Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is a powerful method to determine the atomic structure and the morphology of 2-dimensional materials, while scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) gives access to their local density of electronic states. However, this determination alone does not directly yield the dispersive band structure, and certainly does not give access to more advanced electronic prope...
متن کاملField modulation in bilayer graphene band structure.
Using an external electric field, one can modulate the band gap of Bernal stacked bilayer graphene by breaking the A-[Formula: see text] symmetry. We analyze strain effects on the bilayer graphene using the extended Hückel theory and find that reduced interlayer distance results in higher band gap modulation, as expected. Furthermore, above about 2.5 Å interlayer distance, the band gap is direc...
متن کاملBand topology and quantum spin Hall effect in bilayer graphene
We consider bilayer graphene in the presence of spin orbit coupling, to assess its behavior as a topological insulator. The first Chern number n for the energy bands of single and bilayer graphene is computed and compared. It is shown that for a given valley and spin, n in a bilayer is doubled with respect to the monolayer. This implies that bilayer graphene will have twice as many edge states ...
متن کاملMagnetoplasmons in quasineutral epitaxial graphene nanoribbons.
We present an infrared transmission spectroscopy study of the inter-Landau-level excitations in quasineutral epitaxial graphene nanoribbon arrays. We observed a substantial deviation in energy of the L(0(-1)) → L(1(0)) transition from the characteristic square root magnetic-field dependence of two-dimensional graphene. This deviation arises from the formation of an upper-hybrid mode between the...
متن کاملTunable band gaps in bilayer graphene-BN heterostructures.
We investigate band gap tuning of bilayer graphene between hexagonal boron nitride sheets, by external electric fields. Using density functional theory, we show that the gap is continuously tunable from 0 to 0.2 eV and is robust to stacking disorder. Moreover, boron nitride sheets do not alter the fundamental response from that of free-standing bilayer graphene, apart from additional screening....
